Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Thrilling Double Overtime Triumph

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the decisive baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions opened their championship campaign with a 125-124 win over the Houston Rockets.

The reigning MVP poured in 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in double OT, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.

Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Determination and defense," Gilgeous-Alexander said of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or misfortune. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."

Before the game, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the franchise relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.

Indiana will have the opportunity to get some early revenge on this Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer James as he is recovering from a back issue.
